About Peninsula Bridge
The Peninsula Bridge Program is an education-based nonprofit that was founded in 1989. Our mission is to promote academic and personal success for motivated middle school students from under-resourced communities. Through academic and enrichment programs, Peninsula Bridge prepares students--one at a time--to be prepared for academic success in math and language arts by the time they complete the 8th grade, thus leveling the educational playing field for access to college track courses in high school. About the Position
The volunteer coordinator recruits, assists in training and manages volunteers for various Bridge projects that address the program, development or administrative needs of the organization. Volunteers recruited by the volunteer coordinator will be a diverse group: students currently in the program, their parents, interested community members, high school or college students looking for service experience and donors to the Peninsula Bridge program. Volunteer duties can be one-day, short-term and/or long-term projects.
Once a ninety day trial period has concluded successfully, we hope to retain the volunteer coordinator for at least two years. This position would be part-time and have flexible hours, and once training was complete allow for working at home.
Responsibilities
Volunteer Recruitment and Training
· Recruit required number of volunteers for a variety of projects and roles.
· Develop and maintain relationships with local volunteer agencies, local corporations and other constituencies that might provide volunteers (parents, donors).
· Facilitate and support training of all volunteers.
Planning and Implementation
· Assist staff in updating volunteer positions and projects.
· Look for opportunities to grow the involvement of motivated volunteers.
· Work with staff to coordinate annual volunteer appreciation.
· Complete and keep updated volunteer handbook, volunteer intake protocol, Memo of Understanding for volunteers to sign, and volunteer area on website.
Volunteer Management and Tracking
· Work with Peninsula Bridge staff to manage volunteers.
· Update Peninsula Bridge staff on volunteer projects status. Communicate regularly with Peninsula Bridge staff via meetings, email and one on one interaction.
· Communicate regularly with volunteers through check-in phone calls, e-mails and personal appreciations for their efforts.
· Create and manage a volunteer section in our database. Document and log volunteer hours in the database. Create reports as needed from database on volunteer information and activities.
Evaluation of Volunteer Activities
· Collect and manage feedback via formal and informal evaluations from all parties involved in volunteer activities.
· Provide a one-a-year formal evaluation of volunteer program to Bridge staff and Board of Directors and several informal evaluations throughout the year.
Time Commitment
· 10 hours/week. More time spent in preparation for large events; less time other weeks. Hours are flexible and determined in consultation with Bridge staff. Once training is complete working from home for a portion of the hours may be an option.
Qualifications and Experience
Dedication to volunteerism
· Experience recruiting, training, managing and supporting groups of people.
· Track record of planning and implementing events
· Belief in Peninsula Bridge mission and its guiding principles. Curiosity about Bride and its programs.
· Willingness to reach out to and build relationships with diverse individuals, groups and organizations.
Communication
· Confident in your ability to communicate in person, over the phone and on email.
· Ability to speak and give presentations in front of large groups.
· Desire to be "an evangelist" for Peninsula Bridge and its programs.
· Spanish language ability a huge plus
· Community service experience
· Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds
· Ability to fulfill a two-year commitment
· Enthusiastic and positive attitude toward helping others.
