Castilleja-An Eventful Week by Mia T (Week 3)

Castilleja's Peninsula Bridge site had a very eventful third week! We had a field trip to the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. The students researched Asian culture and art prior to the field trip and were able to excitedly recognize some of the artwork and statues they had researched at the museum.  One of my advisee's, Cortney C., brought me over to a statue and was able to tell me what it exactly was, what it represented, and in what country it is most seen.

Our site director Ms. H had created a scavenger hunt for the girls and we separated into advisories. Each advisory worked really well as a team, making sure the question was read and clarified for those confused and checking to see that everyone was finished with the question before moving on to the next.  The students said that the Asian Art Museum is their favorite so far. I just can't wait to see what they say about our upcoming field trips to the Stanford Linear Acceleration Center, San Jose Tech Museum, and TK Ranch!

On Friday, we had Culture Day in which the students brought in items and shared stories of their culture or family's traditions. The TA's and teachers also participated and brought in items, traditional food, and drinks. Culture Day was not only a good experience for the girls, but for the TA's and teachers as well.  The girls asked insightful questions of each presenter, showing their genuine curiosity and willingness to open their minds to something new. It was a great learning experience for everyone at Castilleja.

The girls also got the unique opportunity to learn a song from a beloved Castilleja teacher, Mrs. P.  The girls seemed to really enjoy the song and Mrs. P's joyful presence. I even heard the girls singing the song among their peers after their practice session, which was really cute to see.

I cannot believe that the program is already halfway over and only two more precious weeks remain! However, I'm very excited to see what the future holds in the next two weeks, what small moments I can take away, and what lessons we'll learn from each other.
